May 6th Quick Pitching Notes
May 6 DK Pitching Thoughts
- Noah Syndergaard (NYM): Forget what happened to deGrom. Thor at Petco against one of the worst lineups in the bigs. Top cash option, but you’re left with a conundrum for GPPs. Many good options at P, and Thor costs $12.9k. Think he can get you 35+? That’s what you need for a GPP. I will fade, but I won’t feel good about it.
- Madison Bumgarner (SF): The time to fade him has passed. Salary has fallen. Yes, COL just scored a TD and two FGs in the 5th inning last night, but MadBum is very tough at home. CarGo with crazy numbers against him, but MB a strong cash and GPP play. I will say: his Hard % and Flyball % are concerning.
- Vincent Velazquez (PHI): Another strong play. Elite K%, but MIA on a roll and not K’ing much right now. Top non-Thor option for cash, but I see merit in fading GPPs if those Ks don’t materialize.
- Zack Greinke (ARI): Great matchup, but he’s still too expensive. Plug him in your cash games b/c ATL is that bad, but I don’t like him one bit for GPPs.
- Cole Hamels (TEX): Intriguing, but average K matchup, BBs a problem, and facing a DET team that sometimes shows up. I’ll pass in cash, but possible GPP play.
- Kenta Maeda (LAD): Maybe TOR is waking up, or maybe just EE is. Either way, Maeda not safe for cash, but love him in GPPs. Good Ks, great control, not many hard hits, facing a TOR team who has been rough offensively (until yesterday). Risky, but low-owned.
- Taijuan Walker (SEA): After Thor, lowest SIERA of group. Good Ks, great control, facing HOU team that Ks a ton. Like him for cash, love him for GPPs.
- Chris Archer (TB): Even if you’re looking at the normal Archer again, LAA doesn’t K enough to make this look worth it. No in cash, no in GPPs.
- Carlos Martinez (STL): Great pitcher, but PIT not the best matchup for this loaded slate. There are safer plays, though could see for GPPs.
- Marcus Stroman (TOR): LAD has been pretty bad lately, but Stroman doesn’t get enough Ks, and Dodgers will hit again sometime. Easy fade for me.
- Rick Porcello (BOS): Given how bad NYY is struggling, RP makes for a strong play in either format. His elite K% doesn’t hurt. However, his SwStr% suggests his Ks will drop soon. People will be too much on him, IMO. I’ll fade for game theory reasons.
- Wei-Yin Chen (MIA): Phillies have 30% Ks vs Ls(!!). Chen outperforming in that area & should regress, but PHI not good at the plate. Solid cash play, fair GPP play.
- Francisco Liriano (PIT): Control still an issue and facing a tough STL team who takes walks. Add in his Hard%, and it’s an easy fade.
- Danny Salazar (CLE): Control a problem, but KC not taking walks and can be had for Ks. Salazar is an elite K machine. Like him a lot as a GPP play.
- Jordan Zimmerman (DET): Outperforming his SIERA by 3.50; that won’t last. That said, TEX not wowing anyone yet. No in cash, ok in GPP until the bottom falls out.
- Yordano Ventura (KC): This reeks of disaster. CLE does K a bit, but Ventura surviving on luck. Has talent to score in GPPs, but his underlying numbers look bad. SIERA of 5.65, lots of hard hits, lots of FBs. Pass.
- Rich Hill (OAK): Ride the O’s while they are cold? Not a bad idea. They K a ton and facing Hill who is on fire. BBs an issue, and not without risk, but not a bad play
- Matt Latos (CWS): Not much here to like. No Ks, way outpacing his SIERA. Might not get shelled, but don’t see the value at $7300.
- Chad Bettis (COL): I like him, but this lines up poorly! No Ks facing a SF team that doesn’t K and hits everyone. No in either format.
- Michael Pineda (NYY): Remember when he cost over $9k? Those were the days! Now down at 7.1k, and I still don’t like him today. BOS too dangerous. No in cash. There’s some long-shot GPP potential, though.
- Ricky Nolasco (MIN): You’re going to hear many recommend him as a pair to a pricey guy, and I don’t disagree. Like him as a cheap cash game option. I still don’t think he’s quite as good as he’s been, but until he shows otherwise, use him!
- Aaron Blair (ATL): Maybe if he cost $5000, but at $6700, it’s a no. Some decent minor league numbers, but hasn’t translated yet. Trouble ahead.
- Ubaldo Jimenez (BAL): Not pitching as badly as numbers say, but you’ve got other options here.
- Drew Pomeranz (SD): Until DK decides to price him where he’s been scoring, you have to give him a good look. NYM are no pushovers, but this is at Petco, and when will you find someone with 30%+ K% at $6600?? Yes for cash; yes for GPPs.
- Doug Fister (HOU): Revenge narrative? I can’t come up with much here. No Ks, no hope of getting any = no relevance.
- Tyler Cravy (MIL): One good start in his ML career. Largely ineffective otherwise. No need to go here.
- Tim Adleman (CIN): Well, he did ok vs PIT. However, you shouldn’t expect much here.
- Cory Rasmus (LAA): Bullpen-by-committee game. Stay far, far away.
